Lampkin opens with an impressive victory the 2001 Fortuna FIM Indoor Trial World Championship

The British had no rival in Sheffield.
Marc Freixa and Marc Colomer, second and third, were far behind Lampkin.

Sheffield, January 7th. ? Doug Lampkin (Montesa-HRC) opened up the 2001 Fortuna FIM Indoor Trial World Championship with an impressive victory on the first round, which was held last Saturday in Sheffield (United Kingdom). The current World Champion (both Indoor and Outdoor) made a good start in his way to defence his world indoor crown; in fact, he didn?t allow any mistake, and his closest rivals (Marc Freixa and Marc Colomer) were far behind him. The two Spaniards had to fight for the second place, which finally was seized by Freixa (Sherco).
The opening lap revealed what would finally happen in the crowded Sheffield Arena (8,000 capacity). Despite the difficult sections and an early five, Lampkin confirmed once again his candidature to break all trial records and marked six zeros in a row. Behind him, all the riders were very close, with the exception of Japanese Takahisa Fujinami (Montesa-HRC), who marked four "fiascos" out of seven sections. Albert Cabestany (Beta), in his first World Indoor Trial appearance, was riding well enough to struggle with veteran Steve Colley (Gas Gas) for the fourth place; finally, and after and additional section, Colley was fourth.
The final round was basically the same. Lampkin displayed an impressive performance and assured his 6th successive Sheffield victory. Freixa was second, and Marc Colomer, in his first appearance with Gas Gas, third.
Next round, Dubai, January 11th. Riders will be Doug Lampkin (Montesa-HRC), Marc Colomer (now riding a Gas Gas), Steve Colley (Gas Gas), Takahisa Fujinami (Montesa-HRC), Marc Freixa (Sherco) and Albert Cabestany (Beta).
